NEC TECH Identifies key drivers for the development of smart electricity metering in Russia and globally
NEC TECH
NEC TECH (part of the NEC Group) presented key trends in the development of smart electricity metering systems at the 11th International Scientific and Technical Conference “Development and Improvement of the Reliability of Electrical Networks”, held as part of the “EEPiR‑2026” exhibition in Moscow. The company highlighted the transition of smart metering from a mere billing function to a key control element of the modern power system.

As part of the business programme, a round table titled “Development of Electricity Metering Systems” was held, bringing together representatives of backbone grid companies, energy supply organisations, software developers and metering device manufacturers. Participants discussed the key directions for digitalisation and transformation of the industry.

Denis Koval, Technical Director of LLC NEC TECH, delivered a presentation on “Main Trends in the Development of Smart Electricity Metering”. In his speech, he focused in detail on the growth drivers for the smart metering market in the residential and small‑motor sectors globally, and on the opportunities to leverage these drivers in the Russian Federation.

Denis Koval also emphasised that today’s smart metering systems address challenges well beyond commercial billing. Specifically, they enable remote equipment control, collection of power quality parameters, integration of distributed small‑scale generation, implementation of demand management tasks, and data transmission for pre‑fault diagnostics and condition‑based maintenance planning. Data exchange security is ensured by built‑in protection mechanisms for information channels and control commands.

During the discussion, participants also addressed issues related to regulatory frameworks, the development of the industry’s digital infrastructure and the interaction of energy market stakeholders.

The “EEPiR‑2026” conference is held with the support of PJSC Rosseti and the “ELECTROENERGIYA” journal, and is one of the key industry platforms. The event brought together representatives from more than 400 organisations from Russia, the CIS and neighbouring countries.
Modern smart metering is the foundation on which a reliable and efficient power system is built. Our goal is not just to follow trends, but to set them – by offering the market innovative solutions based entirely on domestic components.
