NEC.TECH successfully completes R&D project for Rosseti Moscow Region

NEC.TECH Unified Research and Development Centre, part of NEC Group, has successfully completed research and development (R&D) work on a multi-feeder smart electricity meter commissioned by Rosseti Moscow Region PJSC.

The project to develop a multi-feeder smart electricity meter for measuring electricity consumption across connections at 6 (10)–20/0.4 kV transformer substations was carried out by NEC.TECH’s Research and Development Centre from 2024 to 2026.

Rosseti Moscow Region commissioned the development of a metering device with a more compact design and improved operating characteristics.

To meet these requirements, NEC.TECH completed the full R&D cycle: engineering and software documentation was prepared, prototypes were manufactured, and preliminary testing and pilot operation were conducted at a Rosseti Moscow Region facility. All product specifications and operating modes were successfully verified.

As part of the R&D project, NEC.TECH proposed replacing conventional three-phase meters with newly developed external metering modules (EMMs). This solution significantly reduces equipment dimensions: in terms of installation footprint, an EMM occupies 55% less space than a standard three-phase smart electricity meter. The modules measure active and reactive energy with accuracy within the permissible limits for Class 0.5S and Class 1 meters, respectively.

NEC.TECH has also developed EMM versions featuring Class A power quality monitoring.

The external metering module developed by NEC.TECH can be used not only inside transformer substations but also as a standalone metering device, suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation.

The development is particularly important given the limited space available at transformer substations in densely built-up urban areas. At the same time, a single substation may serve a considerable number of connected facilities, making it technically difficult in some cases to install standard meters at every connection.

The key outcome of this R&D project is a solution for smart electricity metering in high-voltage networks that combines compact dimensions with improved operating characteristics.

Currently, there are no domestically manufactured equivalents of this equipment in Russia that are included in the State Register of Measuring Instruments and comply with Rosseti’s corporate standards.

The next step is to expand the deployment of multi-feeder metering devices across Rosseti Moscow Region’s facilities.
